Nifty 50 Index Fund

Illustrative — any large AMC offers one
Very High

A Nifty 50 index fund buys the 50 largest listed companies in India in the same proportion as the Nifty 50 index, and does nothing else. There is no fund manager picking stocks — the fund simply mirrors the index. You get the growth of India's biggest companies for a very low annual cost, and you also get every fall the market has.

What it holds

  • HDFC BankFinancials12.1%
  • Reliance IndustriesEnergy / Conglomerate9.4%
  • ICICI BankFinancials8.6%
  • InfosysIT services5.3%
  • Bharti AirtelTelecom4.4%
  • ITCConsumer3.8%
  • Larsen & ToubroInfrastructure3.7%
  • Tata Consultancy ServicesIT services3.5%
  • Axis BankFinancials3.1%
  • State Bank of IndiaFinancials2.9%

Top 10 of 50 holdings, roughly 57% of the fund. Financials are about a third of the index, so this fund rises and falls with Indian banks more than anything else. Weights change as share prices move; the fund rebalances to match.

Risks and costs

Very High is the label almost every equity fund carries, because share prices swing. The Nifty 50 has fallen 30–40% in bad years (2008, 2020) and recovered within one to two years each time. Suitable for money you will not need for at least seven years; not suitable for money you need in the next three.

Expense ratio (regular plan)
≈ 0.40% a yearDeducted from the fund's value daily; you never see a debit. The direct plan of the same scheme is around 0.15–0.20%; the gap is distributor commission.
Exit load
0.25% if sold within 7 days, nil afterMost index funds have no or minimal exit load. Check the scheme document.
Minimum SIP
₹500 a monthLump sums usually from ₹1,000 or ₹5,000.
Benchmark
Nifty 50 TRITRI = Total Return Index, which includes dividends. The fund aims to track this, minus costs.
Tax on gains
12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a yearLong term = held more than 12 months. Short-term gains taxed at 20%. Rates as per current law; check at the time you sell.
Commission Krore earns
≈ 0.20% a year of your invested valuePaid by the AMC out of the regular plan's expense ratio. Disclosed here because AMFI requires it, and because you should know.

What am I investing in?

The 50 largest companies on the National Stock Exchange, weighted by size. Banks, Reliance, IT services, telecom and consumer companies make up most of it. When these companies grow in value, your units grow; when they fall, so do your units.

What are the risks and costs?

Risk: Very High on the Riskometer — expect swings of 20–40% in bad years, and plan to hold at least seven years. Cost: about 0.40% a year in the regular plan, no entry fee, a small exit load only if you sell within a week.

Where are my investments?

Units are allotted in your name and held with the AMC's registrar (CAMS or KFintech). Krore never holds your money. You can see them on the Krore dashboard, on the registrar's monthly consolidated statement, and directly on the AMC's website.

How do I keep investing consistently?

Set up a SIP on a date just after your salary lands, with an e-NACH mandate so the debit is automatic. Step it up by 10% a year. Your associate will remind you and can pause it for a few months if money is tight.

A SIP in this fund

A ₹5,000 monthly SIP for 10 years puts in ₹6 lakh. At the Nifty 50's long-run average of roughly 12% a year it would be worth about ₹11.6 lakh; at a poor 8% it would be about ₹9.2 lakh; and there will be years in between when it is worth less than you put in. These are illustrations, not forecasts.

This page is an illustration of how Krore explains a scheme. Holdings, weights and costs are representative of Nifty 50 index funds as of October 2026 and are not live data for any specific scheme. Read the actual scheme document before investing.
